Small Group Classes during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Tennis is one of the few sports you can play right now!

Following the further easing of restrictions in England from 1 June announced by the Prime Minister, Tennis Champs can now offer small group classes for 2 – 11 year olds.

They will still be the fun, active and educational classes you know and love, but will take place outdoors at a venue to suit all parties. All classes will be socially distanced, kit will be fully sanitised and children will have to use hand sanitiser at regular points during the sessions. Classes will run differently depending on the age group:

keep safe

2-6 year olds

A parent will be required to join their child for each session, so we can all have fun together!  As the coach will not be able to come close to your child, you will be asked to get actively involved in helping your child, with clear instruction from the coach.

There will be a maximum of 2 children (with their accompanying adults) at these sessions.

For very young children (2-3), this is a slightly less structured class, allowing your youngest Champs to ‘get coordinated to play tennis’ through a range of different bite-sized coordination games involving throwing, catching, foot and hand movements and motor skills. They practice their shapes, numbers, letters and colours and also learn some basic tennis shots using a real racket!

3-4 year olds will be moving from hitting a static ball hit to a bounce-hit. There are more complex games using more intricate footwork, coordination, movement and ball tracking, catching and throwing skills.

For 4-6 year olds, your talented Champ will progress ‘from bounce-hit to rally’. There are more complex coordination, speed and agility activities and games. It’s no longer about just standing still and hitting a static ball, it’s about learning to move around, develop depth perception and start to learn the rules of the game. A parent’s involvement will still be required to assist in developing some of the fundamentals of the game.

7-11 year olds

A parent will not need to join in at these classes. The class will have a maximum of 4 children.

Lessons for this age group focus on developing the all-round player and we coach both beginners and more advanced players. We use a series of enjoyable coordination, agility, footwork, speed and ball-tracking warm-ups and then move on to developing a core technical skill or technique within our game each week.

There are fun matches and finishing games to encourage competitiveness and to develop understanding of point-taking and point counting as well as rules and tactics.

Skills and confidence grow each week as the coach takes time helping each child individually to enhance their stronger skills and develop their weaker areas.

Class Times and Venues

I am extremely flexible with timings and with locations. I am currently holding some sessions at Phillamore Park Radlett and Napsbury Park St Albans, but can also hold sessions in your back garden or any open space with a hard surface. Generally, I will hold sessions on Fridays (all day) and Saturday (mornings).

Please get in contact to discuss the options available by completing the enquiry form or giving me a call on 07930 452711.
